The Dial Panel

The dial panel is the left-most section of the console. It houses the Harrier flight instruments.

Click on the green panel text for more information:

Dial Panel

Fuel Warnings Indicator

The fuel warnings indicator shows the status of the internal fuel tank. The colour of the LED depicts how much fuel the Harrier has:

  • Green - Ample
  • Yellow - Low (also emits a low frequency beep)
  • Red - Empty

In addition, if the indicator is flashing then the internal tank has been punctured. Position the mouse pointer over the indicator during flight to see in the information window how many leaks there are.

Total Fuel Counter

The total fuel counter shows the total amount of fuel that the Harrier is carrying. That is, in the internal fuel plus port and starboard auxiliary fuel tanks.

Fuel Usage Needle

The fuel usage rate needle gives a visual indication of the rate at which fuel is being lost, both through engine consumption and fuel leaks.

Internal Fuel Needle

The internal fuel needle shows the amount of fuel in the internal fuel tank. It does not include fuel in the auxiliary tanks.

Port (left) & Starboard Auxiliary Fuel Dials

The auxiliary fuel dials show the amount of fuel in the port and starboard auxiliary under-wing fuel tanks, if fitted.

Auxiliary Fuel Warning Indicators

The auxiliary fuel warning indicators show the status of the port and starboard (left and right respectively) auxiliary under-wing fuel tanks. The colour of the LED depicts how much fuel the Harrier has:

  • Green - Some fuel remaining
  • Red - Empty (Ready to jettison)
  • Blue - A stores pod is fitted

In addition, if the indicator is flashing then the auxiliary tank has been punctured. Position the mouse pointer over the indicator during flight to see in the information window how many leaks there are. If an auxiliary tank has leaks then it should be jettisoned as soon as it's empty. An empty tank with leaks will cause suck-back from the internal tank, causing greater fuel loss than necessary.

Jettison Port (left) or Starboard (right) Fuel Tank or Stores

These switches will release the under-wing auxiliary fuel tank or stores pod, if fitted. Alternatively they can be jettisoned with the key-codes.

Automatic Ground Avoidance Switch And Indicator

The automatic ground avoidance switch toggles the ground avoidance system between the active and inactive states. The indicator shows shows the current status of the automatic ground avoidance system:

  • Grey - Unavailable
  • Red - Inactive
  • Green - Active
  • Black - Damaged

Automatic Radar Detection Avoidance Switch And Indicator

The automatic radar detection avoidance switch toggles the radar detection avoidance system between the active and inactive states. When active the system attempts to keep the Harrier flying beneath the enemy radar. The indicator shows the status of the automatic radar detection avoidance system:

  • Grey - Unavailable
  • Red - Inactive
  • Green - Active
  • Black - Damaged

Height Dial

The height dial shows the height above ground level of the Harrier.

Maximum Height Needle

The maximum height needle shows the maximum height the Harrier can fly before it will be detected by enemy radar. The needle is only shown if there is enemy radar in the vicinity.

Manoeuvring Indicator

The manoeuvring indicator shows the manoeuvre status of the Harrier:

  • Green - Not in manoeuvre, a new manoeuvre code can be accepted
  • Yellow (Flashing) - Harrier is manoeuvring. A new manoeuvre, or cancel manoeuvre, code can be entered and the current manoeuvre will be aborted
  • Red - Harrier is busy manoeuvring and cannot be interrupted, no new manoeuvres can be accepted

Key-store Indicators

The key-store indicators show the status of the five key-stores:

  • Grey - Unavailable
  • Yellow - Empty or busy
  • Green - Ready

Enemy Radar Detector

The enemy radar detector shows wether the Harrier can be 'seen' by enemy radar:

  • Grey - Unavailable or no enemy radar in the vicinity
  • Green - Currently flying under enemy radar
  • Yellow - Currently flying too high, detection imminent
  • Red (flashing) - Harrier has been detected, enemy aircraft have been alerted
  • Black - Damaged

Speed Dial

The speed dial shows the air speed of the Harrier.
