Run For Cover
Briefing
After a clandestine raid in enemy territory, and armed only with
ground attack weapons, you must return to your carrier. Sneak back,
avoiding the fast attack jet patrols. Destroy as many enemy ground
forces as possible en-route.
When you become aware of a patrols presence, fly through a
nearby cloud. The jets will lose sight of you and leave your
vicinity for a while.
The 'Locate Cloud Cover'
skill can be used as a quick way of locating and flying through the
nearest cloud.
Guide
In this mission you come under heavy air attack from fast jet fighters armed with radar-guided
missiles.
You have no air attack weapons, so a chaff dispenser is a must.
Your objective is to destroy as many ground targets as
possible.
Destroying the ground targets
Fairly straight-forward, just bomb them. You will need to deviate
from the flight path, certainly to win
two awards. Some have flack guns for
defence so are best approached from behind.
Coping with the air attack
There are several strategies you can use here, and you'll
probably need all of them.
Use chaff to deflect incoming
missiles.
Use the 'Console Repair' skill
constantly; if your radar or chaff
dispenser become damaged you need them up and running again as
quickly as possible.
When flying down from the mountains staying low makes it more
difficult for the enemy to get a missile lock on you.
The best defence is to fly through a cloud. The enemy will lose sight of you and
fly off for a period, leaving the air clear.
Objectives and awards
If you have managed to land safely, or eject if necessary, the
next mission, 'Revenge', is unlocked for
you to play.
To win awards you need to have destroyed at least 30% of the
ground targets. Only two of the three awards offered may be won.
All of the awards can be useful in this mission.
The automatic chaff
dispensing is only useful if you also have both the chaff dispenser and the incoming radar-guided
missile detector, so it is not a good first choice. Your
options are either to win the incoming missile detector and then
the automatic dispenser, or, the 'Locate Cloud Cover' skill and the
incoming missile detector. The 'Locate Cloud Cover' skill can be
very useful, it is often otherwise not easy to find a cloud when
you need one, or to know if there is one near. In some missions,
however, there are no clouds at all.
