The South Island Missions

The three South Island missions provide a short introduction to Harrier Attack II.

In each mission your Harrier takes off from its mother carrier and flies along a fixed flight path, over the objective area. At the end of the flightpath your Harrier will rendezvous with the carrier and land..

In the early stages of play your Harrier cannot stray from the flight path and targets that you don't directly fly over will be difficult or impossible to reach. As the flight path nears its end, when you don't have the skill to turn your aircraft, your Harrier will automatically be guided in to land on the carrier deck. Later, when you have been awarded the skill to turn (in the 'Repel' mission), fly low, straight and slow over the carrier deck to land. If you fail to land the first time it's probably because you are flying too high or too fast. Turn around and try again. If you fly on past your carrier to the end of the marked flight path, your Harrier will turn automatically..

In each of the South Isand missions, your Harrier has a full tank of fuel and is equipped with an infinite number of bombs and wire-guided air-to-air missiles. At first you will not have the secondary fire button and weapon selection available, this can be won in the 'Repel' mission. You must use the primary weapon select to switch weapons when necessary. Each mission is designed so that it is possible to achieve all of the objectives with the skills and equipment that you can win in the previous and current missions. It may be necessary to play a mission, win an award from it, then play the mission again and use the award to achieve further objectives. It should never be necessary to return to a mission, having won awards in more advanced missions, but it may be helpful to do so if you get stuck.

There are four sets of objectives in each South Island mission. The first set describe what needs to be done to unlock the next mission. Each of the other three entitle you to an award, either a piloting skill or some extra equipment that can be used in future missions, or to better your acheivements in the current mission..

The South Island missions are:
